Unconscionable profits funding universal wellbeing
A self-financing tax incentive could allocate "Unconscionable profits" to fund a universal well-being dividend to all citizens to replace welfare, and compulsory superannuation. The incentive would introduce "boomerang" share ownership to "buy back the farm". It would raise domestic incomes, savings, and investments by eliminating the "unlimited, unknown, and uncontrolled foreign liability" of foreign investment described by Professor Penrose.

Keating on Kissinger
The former PM's statement is understandable comment given his ongoing relationship with Kissinger.

A question of counting?
Numerous examples of selective reporting are clear evidence but the latest ABC updates appear to have included a mysterious reset.
-
Big Oil and big lies
Harvard researchers proved that Exxon scientists 30 years ago predicted the harmful result of continued fossil fuel use
-
Let’s put Covid deaths into context
Covid might be a leading cause of death but without the actual figures giving us context for such a claim such a statement can be misleading.
-
Marise Payne and the inquiry into Covid
I found Richard Broinowski's article both informative and interesting, however there was one sentence that stood out to me as ill-considered.

Our democracies must change to meet the climate crisis
Our democracies are ill-equipped to meet the challenge which our climate now presents. They must reform or evolve.
-
Australia, UK and USA are militarising the Indo-Pacific
China is criticised for militarising islands in the South China Sea, but Australia, the UK and USA are doing the same in the Indo-Pacific to contain China.

Slaughter of the Innocents
"Hope Is The Thing With Feathers"

Hamas attacks were not ‘by the Palestinian people’
This is an objectionable phrase.
-
Concerning climate predictions
Need for predictions over a longer term

Criticism of Israel is not Antisemitic
Criticism of Israel is not antisemitic. The Myth of a Jewish Race results in holding Jews individually or collectively responsible for Israel’s policies and actions and is, in itself, a form of antisemitism.
-
Women’s Voice
All articles on Saturday last week were written by men. Women’s voice is needed too. Wondering whether Pearls and Irritations' processes unconsciously favour older men?
-
The ongoing battle to keep Australia a petrostate
As Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen announces a doubling of the renewable energy capacity on the grid, Gina Rinehart and the Murdoch press double down on their opposition to moving away from fossil fuels.

How Australia and Australians have changed!

Can an Australian soldier disregard orders if they believe that order to be unlawful?
After reading John Jiggens’ article about David McBride, I find myself confused as to the answer to this question.
-
A minor dissension
George Browning has written a compelling argument in his open letter to Julian Leeser on why criticism of Israel is not anti-semitism. I have one very minor criticism.
-
My Lai massacre in Vietnam
Reminiscent of My Lay atrocities in Vietnam

McMullen misses major factor: Biden’s incompetence
Biden’s onrushing senility is a real factor in the 2024 US presidential elections

Relationship to Asia
Dutton's fear mongering does a lot of damage. Both here and in relationships with our neighbours.
-
The success of lobbyists is widening the Gap
The recent UN Production Gap Report found planned production of fossil fuels is more than double that required to limit warming to 1.5°C. Australia is contributing to this because of our totally inadequate lobbying Code of Conduct.
-
A Vile Article
I am an Australian Jew who's unsubscribing.

Supporting sensible climate policy
In support of Gregory Andrews' climate hunger strike and evidence based demands of the Albanese government in a time of climate crisis.

Indefinite Detention and the NZYQ case
The recent High Court case of NZYQ raises a more fundamental issue than simply the legality of indefinite immigration detention. The issue is this: does the High Court of Australia have any responsibility for the peace, order and good governance of the country? Or, to be more specific, in situations as complex as the NZYQ case, can the High Court simply declare indefinite immigration detention to be unlawful and with sovereign detachment leave it to the executive to sort out the ensuing mess?

Do international agreements mean anything?
Commonwealth prosecutorial authorities seem to ignore at home the principles we have signed up to internationally for the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice
-
The entire Public Health System is now enslaved to “The System”
Robbie Lloyd is to be congratulated on his article outlining the issues and challenges facing the Aged Care “Industry” in Australia.
-
Ugly Christian Apocalyptic beliefs
Reb Halabi has done Australia a great favour in outing Scott Morrison as one who is a believer in the inevitability and righteousness of a Christian End-of-days, Armageddon, a Rapture, and a Second Coming, and that then, the morally good will rise from their graves and ascend to heaven to enjoy everlasting life.

Mitigation and Australia
Mike Scafton has pointed out that the Australian treasury is viewing climate mitigation through an economic lens instead of an environmental one. At least that is an improvement on the previous government, but the inadequacy is obvious: and they are not alone, hardly any government worldwide is actually doing enough. But Australia really does have an opportunity or threat choice that politicians seem unable to articulate.

END TIMES AND ARMAGEDDON WELCOMED
The article in Pearls and Irritations Public Policy Journal, by Reb Halabi 10 November was so spot on in its summation of what motivates Scott Morrison and his ilk, I was moved to write my first letter to your publication.

Immigration: economy, politics or survival?
Abul Rivzi has pinpointed the connection between past and current immigration policies and the nastiness it can and likely will create in the political sphere. I hope to see more of his clear-headed thinking on the social turmoil the right-wingers will bring to the issue, but even more, I would like to hear his views on the more significant but pressing problem of what might constitute a sustainable population and immigration level, given renewed concerns regarding a likely drought and major city water supplies.
