Rise in antisemitism?
How can the claim be made that antisemitism is on the rise in the absence of: • An agreed definition of antisemitism; • Actual objective, quantitative data I found much of the publicly reported evidence to the Antisemitism Royal Commission underwhelming, consisting of: • A reflection of fear of antisemitism, e.g., not wearing Star of David, increased security at Jewish schools • Unsupported anecdotal evidence, going back decades in some cases; unfortunately probably reflecting the experiences of any number of minority groups in Australia. We have already seen criminal elements take advantage of the fear of antisemitism for other purposes. I am reminded of the recurring debate about crime in the community, where media coverage can often amplify fears of crime, contributing to a moral panic that may not align with actual crime trend data. I suspect the same may be true of antisemitism.
