Everything old is new again

I have just finished reading The Amour of Light by Ken Follett. A good read. Set in the 1790’s I could not help but marvel at how little has changed in 250 years. “Only the names and faces have been changed to FOOL the idiots." The workers are underpaid and live in hovels and poverty. The industrial revolution is making the rich richer and the poor unemployed. The French poor are revolting, overthrowing the French monarchy. Other monarchies going to war to defend their status quo / entitlement. The already low standard of living is dropping to fund the war. The poor go off to war to die and the rich stay home to get richer by the war . The luddites damaging the job destroying machinery get capital punishment. The petty criminals get to decide between deportation to the colonies and joining the army. The wives of the poor go to war so there is some nursing and feeding happening . The upper middle class gamble away the family wealth and the ultra rich buy up at bargain prices.
