Albanese is, most likely, not an intrinsically corrupt person - in either the venial or the societal sense. But his latest faux pas - let’s indulge ourselves and call it Kyliegate - puts him squarely in the ranks of the ’less commonsense than an addled budgerigar’ class of Prime Ministers / Party leaders.

And that is a rather crowded nest. Some are immortalised by resonant phrases: ‘The Things that Batter’; ‘Shit Happens’; ‘Please Explain’; some are just a miasma of brainfarts. A common feature is that none of them has in any way left Australia better off for their incumbency of the highest office.

We need a Statesman leader, committed to driving Australia to a better future environmentally, politically, diplomatically, in terms of defence, observance of humanitarian decency and support for and observance of our obligations to ’the international rule of order’ - but we get a clown wasting time on trivial social media discussing the sexual appeal of entertainers.

Labor faithful have been exceedingly generous towards Albanese’s failures, but enough is now reached.
