I agree with John Menadue on virtually every point he makes, but I would add one further issue: the Labor Party desperately needs new leadership – leadership with vision, courage and heart.

Anthony Albanese’s leadership has become defined by risk aversion, excessive message control and political caution and while that may deliver short-term electoral security, it doesn’t inspire people or build a movement. Labor was founded to represent ordinary Australians and to pursue bold reform, not simply to manage government and avoid controversy.

Many long-time Labor members and supporters are leaving because they no longer recognise the party they joined. It’s become tired, stale and overly controlled by factional interests and political management. Transparency, grassroots participation and genuine debate have been replaced by discipline, polling and scripted messaging.

As Menadue argues, Labor has drifted away from its traditional values and become increasingly disconnected from its membership and constituency. Winning office is important, but governing without a clear sense of purpose is self-defeating. If Labor is to rebuild trust and enthusiasm, it needs leaders who are prepared to articulate a compelling vision for Australia’s future, take moral positions even when they carry political risk and reconnect the party with its members.
