In response to Australia should take another look at France’s nuclear submarines

Did the Australian Government pay France a sizeable penalty a number of years for withdrawing from its contract to purchase the French submarines?

If the answer is yes, could that money be used as a credit if Australia pulls l out of the US purchase and returns to its original contract with France.
