The predictable, inevitable decline of the US

A Trump-like figure was always predictable. It’s perhaps fitting that the Trump the US got is as uncouth as he is. Capitalism and the worship of profit led to neo-liberalism, led to so much wealth in the hands of so few that it is now, inevitably, unsustainable by the poverty of the many beneath it. The death of the US soul is symbolised in the destruction at the White House – tearing up the beauty of the Rose Garden, tearing down the history of the East Wing, replacing restraint and elegance within the whole with gaudy gold bling.

On the world stage, the US demonises China as responsible for the US economic decline instead of ditching the poison that is neo-liberalism. Its military build up and exercises around China’s coastline threaten unjustified war. It bombs Iran because the joint Israel/US-funded genocide in Palestine and beyond is going so badly. It rails against those countries’ human rights abuses while ignoring its own.

While Australia remains tied to the US and continues aping US policies and practices, we risk going down with the US ship. We continue to go “all the way with the USA” at our peril.
