Western racism and convenient perpetrators
I could not but agree with Catriona about the pathological hatred that lies just below the surface, but sadly as she says sometimes well above the surface, of the Australian psyche when it comes to China. Much of that strain of racism we have inherited from the now appropriately dead odious, rapacious and covetous British empire. Academic estimates of the death toll of that empire range as high as 165 million “other”. Given the British capacity to hide what it had done by simply not recording it, these estimates may be very large underestimates. This capacity for unrestrained violence was best demonstrated in relation to their treatment of races deemed to be inferior to white English people. Mind you that racism also extends to the rest of Europe and the US. The Indians and Chinese, along with the native peoples of Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US were all subjected to this mindless and utterly laughable sense of superiority. The Brits succeeded in passing on that virus to the white British remnants that occupied Australia. It has metastasised throughout the public life of Australia ever since. Now China is re-emerging as a world hegemon it has become almost terminal.
