In response to Enough. Australia is a successful nation of migrants – Message from the Editor

Future population growth needs to slow down

People keep confusing a genuine conversation about the future amount of humans that Australia can cope with migrating to our country, with criticism of existing migrants. It’s so frustrating to see so many articles turning a discussion on visa numbers into accusations of racism. While I am no fan of the coalition, economists agree they are right that our future migration intake has to take into account the provision of housing and infrastructure, the impact of overcrowding and the quality of life of the existing population. The states are going into debt and are nowhere near providing the right amount of infrastructure for our existing population. I find it hard to see how so many media commentators don’t understand this, and can’t have a civil conversation about how many people Australia can cope with each year, without throwing baseless accusations of racism around. Each additional person causes more damage to the environment, and as the country with the highest number of mammal extinctions in the world, Australia needs to have a serious think about protecting the environment and existing resident’s quality of life by slowing down immigration.
