Albanese’s Timidity
I wholeheartedly support Paul Begley’s expose (July 30, 2024) of the shortcomings of Anthony Albanese’s leadership of the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party in his role as Prime Minister. He is clearly out of his depth with his no risk timid approach and it’s even more damning that he hasn’t supported his Ministers following pressure from the Opposition, when he needs to get on the front foot and show loyalty by defending them.
My biggest gripe is with his unquestioning acceptance of Morrison’s AUKUS (USUKA) without proper due diligence. Deputy PM and Defence Minister Marles, who is also out of his depth, is equally to blame. It’s no wonder that Labor is suffering in the polls with such weak leadership. It would be astonishing if the Coalition wins the forthcoming election, when one term governments are extremely rare.
I can understand any reluctance to challenge Albanese’s leadership in the light of the instability with past leadership challenges in the Rudd/Gillard years and particularly being so close to the next election. However, the prospects for re-election don’t look great at the moment.
The best thing that could happen is if Labor scrapes in with a minority government and Albanese loses his seat.
