Labor hasn’t done it on its own
“Labor has gone from promising in Opposition to end the swindle to denying it exists in government.”
A variation on disappointment with Labor on education continues across many areas. And in some cases wouldn’t have gone as far as Labor did had it not been for Independents pushing for more and in the end Independents standing up and saying changes still haven’t gone far enough.
The Independents don’t often get credit for any improvements because no one sees them talking to Labor (or Liberal or Greens) MPs on the phone, at meetings, and face-to-face inside the hallowed but oft abused halls of Parliament House.
The work of Helen Haines (Indi) on the NACC and Monique Ryan (Kooyong) on HECS debt are two examples where the work of Independents has been seen by many but not acknowledged by Labor.
However, they are not the only Independents working so effectively behind the scenes, across the board. Unlike party backbenchers who, at the end of the day, have to follow their leaders, Independents work how, where and with whom they choose, keeping on pushing to achieve better outcomes for all of us.
We should remember that when we vote.
