Lucky you didn’t bet the farm on it, Malcolm
Malcolm Fraser stepped on a rainbow a while ago, but this reminder of his faith in the US’ honesty with its allies is both quaint and germane to the whole AUKUS idiocy.
At the AWM, I occasionally chatted with some of the chiefs of each branch of the ADF. During one such chat, a chief (who shall remain nameless) confided in me that shortly after being promoted to that position, he randomly, and without prior warning, would visit the various establishments under his command.
On one visit to a base situated in the numerically lower latitudes of Australia, he was astonished to find a large storage building guarded by several US Marines, who exhibited the typical Marine unblinking focus on their appointed duty.
He asked the Base Commander how come they were there and what was in the building. In short, the answer was “since before my time, and though I reported it formally, I was advised verbally to forget the whole thing existed”.
“Nuclear munitions?'”I asked.
”I don’t know and we never will,” was the answer.
Fraser lost his trousers in the US and the current government may well lose us our strategic independence.
