Time to step up, Albo, or step away
The defining characteristic of Anthony Albanese’s government has been the leadership void at the top. This first became apparent during the tragedy of the Voice referendum. The PM declared that his government’s first priority would be the full implementation of the Uluru Statement From The Heart. He then let this matter be carried by others; he himself was barely seen or heard.
And now we have the same issue with climate risk. Addressing climate change was a big issue in the election, but since then we have heard little from our PM. There is no sense of driving vision; our PM again remains largely unseen and unheard. This absence on duty has left the void which Peter Dutton gladly fills. He is driving public opinion with his nuclear dreams just as he drove his ‘if you don’t know, vote no’ with the Voice.
Albanese’s leadership is not simply a weakness of leadership style: it is proving to be a tragedy with real world impacts – first for First Nations peoples; now, with climatic risk, for all.
Step up Albo or, for the good of the country, step aside for someone with the drive and vision to take charge and lead.
