Danger using Pine Gap in Negotiations with the US

Recent revelations of the role the CIA played in the dismissal of Whitlam after he threatened to close Pine Gap will have dampened Labour’s willingness to use it to negotiate a better deal with the US over the ANZUZ treaty. Albanese, Marles, and Wong have clearly shown their complete lack of interest in rocking the boat and are demonstrating their awareness and fear of the ruthlessness of the US when it comes to real threats to their security apparatus.

The reality is the Coalition and the right wing press would have an absolute field day if Labour had the temerity to challenge US control of Australia. Whether we like it or not we have no leaders on either side capable or willing to protect our sovereignty.

Our only hope is that Trump is elected and decides to discontinue the US’s efforts to maintain its position of hegemony in East Asia and the Pacific. Then we may have a chance to begin to regain our sovereignty.

But don’t hold your breath.
