Where are the honest and critical reports?
March 23, 2025
Can any self-respecting journalist or political commentator inform me and many Australians as to why they continue to bolster the Australia/United States togetherness as though it is the same relationship of years past? The United States is not a friend – it is increasingly becoming a pariah state, joining its very best friend, Israel.
Surely the most egregious acts have been the the unbelievable crazy and vindictive announcements and subsequent almost “evil” actions from the White House by a convicted felon, against his own country (now affecting the world), while supported by his obsequious billionaires and appalling non-entities now given the chance to climb the greasy pole.
All bound up with a genocidal maniac leader under threat of international arrest threat for his destruction and killings in Gaza, actions condemned by the International Criminal Court. Two men totally in opposition to what I had hoped might be the strength of the Australian character of fairness and egalitarianism. But, alas, finding such actions and politics are deemed attractive, beguiling and all too easy to fall into this insidious creep of right-wing and fascist agendas promoted by our mainstream media.
Where are the voices of the intelligent journalists/learned opinion writers in mainstream media – or is that indeed an oxymoron these days? Phil Coorey named as our best political journalist, claims Bernard Keane from Crikey – really? The Australian public are now increasingly fed the rhetoric transposed from America by their conservative right, with threats against those not white, appealing to the generations of Aussies with little or limited or insufficient education much like their “American brethren”. Even printing or twittering the now whining voices of those men feeling so badly done by women. Where are the honest and critical and objective words written from research and truth not spin?
Thankfully for the few and growing online news sites, including many from the UK, Europe and even America, there is an emerging volume of podcasts and YouTube sites that provide excellent resources with intelligent interviews with people who matter and are informed. Together with thoughtful and knowledgeable writers on a wide range of important issues for Australia.
But do they reach the above mentioned ill-informed and addled conspiracy voters, and who regrettably could be the deciders in the next election? One also suspects that political advisers to our federal ministers are not spending time watching or listening to these other voices to broaden their education, away from the right-wing pundits, on the egregious actions being taken in the Middle East, and increasingly every day by America.
Despite our status as a secular society, be aware that the next influence will be the full-on import of the Christian nationalist and Zionist rhetoric of the far-right increasing the focus of headlines now, as the genocide and ethnic cleansing goes on hourly before our eyes in Gaza. And our less than adequate reporters and media concentrate on stirring up accusations of antisemitism when citizens speak of supporting Palestine and criticise the Zionist movement and Israeli Government. Shame on the government, with its hurried legislation stifling debate.
Regrettably, even our national broadcaster, that once spoke objectively, with calm and informed knowledge, now whistles the same mantra as the Murdoch toadies. Better to concentrate on words, not devastating destruction and death. To decry the actions of those who support the Palestinians and are enraged at the actions of Israel on a day when over 200 Palestinians have been killed by IDF drones and bombs because it would be antisemitic speech is outrageous.
Cowardly attacks from the air, without warning, killing elderly men and women and children – so Israelis can be proud of this action? Netanyahu is a prime minister out of control and a bloodthirsty vengeful man intent on on keeping his political and military power. Shame on Australia; should we not accuse him of genocide, ethnic cleansing and apartheid?
America, to repeat is not our best friend or our best ally. It is a self centred, arrogant, greedy and at times a completely crazy nation. It is appalling that we cling to this image of 80 years past that the US is our friend, ready to help out – in exchange, of course, for the presence in our land of American military and intelligence centres. America has shown it turns on its allies with a signature on a piece of paper. Perhaps millions of Australians can hope that a signature could end the AUKUS agreement as easily as its instant actions against Canada and Mexico. Although like all bullies, once stood up to they eventually crumble although regrettably, only momentarily.
And a final word out of my anger and despair, Can we not adopt the same attitude and strong words and actions as Canada? Yes, the tariffs can affect small segments of our export industries, knowing most affected are already owned or part owned by overseas corporations. Individual citizens can show their displeasure by taking action. Don’t buy American goods, imported foods and alcohol, indeed boycott the lot! Read the labels and support and encourage Made in Australia.
To finish on the theme of mainstream media, the ridiculous, ill-informed and obsequiousness of the range of mainstream media “reporters” must be questioned – their motives and those of their owners need to be scrutinised. At what stage are there payoffs, bonuses and what do they think the opposition, shown to be without any vision or policies, could ever bring to the betterment and advancement of Australia and its citizens? Would or could it be yet another round, a repeat, of Morrison lite and co, debt and cruelty against the vulnerable, licking the boots and lining the pockets of those with already bulging pockets?
Worse, their obsequious bowing down to the demands of the American state, the autocratic regime regrettably voted in by the ambitious, the ignorant, the fundamentalist, the desperate and the zealots who support the actions of the Trump and Netanyahu governments without question.
Beware we do not follow suit.
