An open letter to the Australian PM from a child of Holocaust survivors

Dear Anthony Albanese,

I am a child of Holocaust survivors. More than 95% of my extended family perished during World War II in Nazi extermination camps while others were killed by mobile death squads or through starvation in a number of ghettoes.

The current Israeli Government is implementing a policy of collective punishment through massive bombing, indiscriminate killing of civilians and currently through mass starvation. The Palestinian people face a situation which is identical to what the Jewish people faced in the Warsaw Ghetto, that is, where the power in charge is determined to exterminate a hapless and largely defenceless captive population.

The Australian Government, during the time of the Holocaust, did not take any measures to defend the Jewish people. Today, this lack of a resolute moral opposition in rejecting another genocide, this time the Palestinian, that translates into a practical and immediate ending of the extermination of the Palestinians, is again lacking on the part of your Australian Government.

I, therefore, urge you and your government in the strongest possible terms to use all means within the powers of your government to put an immediate end to this policy of mass extermination through the method of starvation.

Do not repeat the moral turpitude of the Lyons and Menzies governments which did absolutely nothing to oppose the Nazi Government in its drive to exterminate the Jewish people.

Yours sincerely,

John-Janusz Ebel
