Jeff Schubert began his career as a junior manufacturing executive in Adelaide before moving to the Treasury in Canberra, and then Chief Economist of HSBC and a tax policy adviser in Sydney. He later became a business and foreign policy analyst in Russia and China.

Trump’s Greenland for Odessa deal
In late February 2022, I was walking on a street in Irkutsk (in the middle of Russian Siberia) when I met a former female student of mine who had just come from her work office. She was upset by the invasion of Ukraine but even more so by the attitude of some women in the office. The main topic of discussion was speculation on “how many new provinces we will get”.

Confidential letter to Trump on AUKUS
Dear Donald, I know that you are a great deal-maker, but you will be seen as even greater if you do as I suggest. Australia is already providing $4 billion to the United States under the AUKUS deal without any guarantee that Virginia class nuclear submarines will ever be provided to it. I suggest that this amount be doubled or even tripled to even $12 billion.

Australia's group think epidemic and the Adelaide AUKUS fairytale
The idea that nuclear submarines can be built in Adelaide under AUKUS has the characteristics of the “group think” that led to invasion of Iraq in 2003, and has been described by former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer as a bit of a fairytale.
