George Yeo Yong-Boon, a distinguished former Foreign Minister of Singapore, offers a compelling narrative on the resilience and enduring legacy of Chinese civilisation. His reflections span China’s adept handling of the COVID-19 pandemic to its ancient water management systems, revealing a civilisation rooted in wisdom and adaptability.

Yeo praises China’s COVID-19 response, underscoring its remarkably low mortality rate as reported by the World Health Organisation. This success is attributed to China’s disciplined, coordinated efforts, highlighting the strength of its governance model. He contrasts this with significant trade deficits during the pandemic years, which, while challenging, underscore China’s role as a global economic powerhouse.

Drawing from historical achievements, Yeo emphasises the Dujiangyan irrigation system in Chengdu, an engineering marvel that has sustained generations. This ancient feat of water control symbolises China’s innovative spirit and its capacity to nurture a vast population.

Central to Yeo’s narrative is the Confucian ethos of “benevolence, justice, etiquette, wisdom, and trust.” These values, deeply ingrained in Chinese society, have been pivotal in shaping China’s cultural and moral framework. They serve as the foundation of a cohesive, forward-looking society.

Yeo also highlights the significant influence of the Chinese diaspora in Singapore, noting that 75% of Singapore’s Chinese population has played a decisive role in the country’s prosperity. This cultural heritage, intertwined with modern progress, underscores the global impact of Chinese civilisation.

In Yeo’s view, China’s rise is inevitable and unstoppable. He sees a nation fortified by its historical roots, cultural values, and strategic ingenuity. His reflections encourage a nuanced appreciation of China’s trajectory, suggesting that its ascent is not merely about economic and military might but also about the revival of a rich, multifaceted civilisation.
