Indigenous Australians have extensive land rights across Northern Australia where large scale militarisation is being undertaken, raising questions about processes of consultation and underlying Indigenous rights endorsed by Australia under international treaty arrangements.

Michael Lester discusses with Henry Reynolds, Professor of History, University of Tasmania. Reynolds argues that Australia has tragically missed out on a whole generation of international reform to Indigenous rights and by rejecting the Voice referendum has essentially taken a step backwards to the assimilationist ideas of the 1950s that deny any distinctive rights to Indigenous peoples.
