ACCCR calls for ethical and responsible leadership in the federal election

As Australians prepare to vote in the upcoming federal election, the Australasian Catholic Coalition for Church Reform (ACCCR) is calling on voters, political leaders, and policymakers to place social justice, compassion, and integrity at the forefront of governance.

In a time of growing economic disparity, climate urgency, and political disillusionment, the ACCCR has urged all Australians to consider the values of human dignity, fairness, and care for the vulnerable when making their electoral choices.

ACCCR is a voice for Catholics who seek a caring, responsible society and life-giving culture where those least able to help themselves are assisted and empowered. It is committed to advocating for policies that reflect fundamental ethical and moral principles. In this election, ACCCR highlights five key areas that demand urgent attention and action from political candidates and voters alike.

1. Social and economic justice

A fair and just society must prioritise policies that address economic inequality, ensure a living wage, and strengthen the social safety net. The rising cost of living, increasing housing insecurity, and growing disparities in wealth distribution highlight the need for policies that support the most vulnerable members of our society. ACCCR calls on candidates to commit to economic strategies that reduce poverty, ensure fair wages, and provide adequate social services for those in need.

Beyond economic measures, social justice must be embedded in policies that promote equal opportunities in education, employment, and healthcare. ACCCR believes a nation’s strength is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens, and this election provides an opportunity to build a more equitable society.

2. Justice for First Nations

A just Australia must acknowledge and address the historical and systemic injustices faced by First Nations peoples. ACCCR urges political leaders to commit to real action on reconciliation by implementing the Uluru Statement from the Heart. This includes establishing a Makarrata Commission to oversee reconciliation and truth-telling processes that acknowledge past wrongs.

The coalition also calls for targeted policies that improve the health, education, and economic outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, that are developed with members of those communities. Closing the gap requires real commitment, ongoing funding, and systemic change.

3. Climate action and care for creation

The climate crisis remains one of the most urgent moral and ethical challenges of our time. It is a wicked problem that politicians hope will not keep intruding into their lives. ACCCR insists that strong and decisive action is needed to reduce carbon emissions, support renewable energy, and protect the environment. Australia, as one of the world’s largest per capita carbon emitters, has a responsibility to take leadership in transitioning to a sustainable and low-carbon economy.

ACCCR calls for bipartisan commitment to climate policies that align with the Paris Agreement, invest in green technology, and support communities affected by climate change. Protecting creation is a moral imperative that extends beyond politics; it is about ensuring a liveable planet for our children and grandchildren.

4. Human rights and refugee protection

Australia’s treatment of refugees and asylum-seekers has been criticised internationally for some time. ACCCR advocates for an end to the inhumane offshore detention of refugees and asylum-seekers and for policies that uphold Australia’s commitment to our human rights obligations. Ensuring fair and humane treatment for asylum-seekers is a moral responsibility that reflects the values of compassion and dignity.

ACCCR also calls for an immigration system that is transparent, fair and just. Policies should prioritise family reunification, offer pathways to permanent residency and treat those seeking asylum with the humanity and respect they deserve.

5. Integrity in politics

The erosion of public trust in democratic institutions is a growing concern in Australia. ACCCR believes transparency, accountability and integrity must be the foundation of governance. The establishment of a strong federal anti-corruption commission is crucial to restoring faith in political processes and ensuring that those in power are held accountable.

Voters must choose leaders who uphold ethical governance, resist the influence of vested interests and commit to policy-making that serves the common good. A healthy democracy requires politicians who act with honesty and integrity, placing people’s needs above personal or corporate interests.

A call to faith communities and voters

Faith communities have historically played a crucial role in advocating for justice, compassion, and the common good. ACCCR encourages Catholics and all people of faith to reflect on these moral and ethical principles when voting. Voting is not merely a political act; it is a moral decision that shapes the direction of the nation.

As the election campaign intensifies, ACCCR calls for respectful and informed debate, free from personal attacks, misinformation and political opportunism. The choices made by voters will determine whether Australia moves toward a more inclusive, compassionate, and sustainable future.

In the final week of the campaign, ACCCR will circulate an assessment of the policies proposed by political parties, helping voters make informed decisions based on principles of justice and integrity.

The future is in our hands

This election is a pivotal moment for Australia. The policies and leaders chosen will shape the nation’s future, determining whether it upholds the values of fairness, compassion and justice. ACCCR urges all Australians to vote with their conscience, prioritising policies that protect the vulnerable, uphold human rights, and safeguard the planet.

Political leaders must rise to the challenge with courage and integrity. It is time for governance that reflects the best of our shared values and aspirations – a society where justice and compassion are not just ideals but lived realities.
