A people’s inquiry about the cost of the US alliance

Sep 29, 2021

Independent Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN) is currently facilitating a people’s inquiry exploring the costs and consequences of the US alliance and US-led wars and exploring the alternatives.
While the closing date for submissions was to be September 21, given the recent unprecedented announcement of the Morrison government’s decision to join the trilateral security agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS) and to develop nuclear submarines, we believe that we need to allow some opportunity for people to make submissions about these developments.

We are now approaching a number of people to ask them to consider making a submission about the trilateral security agreement (AUKUS) and the development of nuclear submarines by October 5.

Therefore we were wondering if you might consider making a submission here within the next two weeks specifically on the recent developments.

We would greatly appreciate any submissions on these matters, to ensure that our final inquiry report reflects current developments.

This petition is based on a public statement developed on the weekend by a number of peace, environmental and other activists and organisations about the developments.

The terms of reference for the inquiry can be found here. Submissions to the inquiry will be reviewed by a panel of experts chaired by lawyer and human rights activist Kellie Tranter, and used to create a report on the US alliance and alternatives. This report will be used both inside and outside of government. Submissions can be very brief — as short as a paragraph/or a page or up to 5000 words. We also accept pieces you may have written for publication.

The primary aim of this inquiry is to create a more nuanced and informed foreign policy, however, the Inquiry will also seek to inform and engage the Australian public on foreign policy.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. You can find out more information and submit via the website.
